  19. I read on the net, that xdvik is able to display .dvi files which
  20. contain PostScript pictures. So I got the sources for xdvik-1.7 from
  21. the directory pub/tex/dviware/xdvik on ftp.uni-stuttgart.de and
  22. installed xdvik on our machine (SUN Sparc10 workstation running SunOs
  23. 4.1.3).

  25. Prior to this we had installed the TeX distribution (with binaries)
  26. from ftp.tex.ac.uk.
  27.  
  28. In principle everything works fine with xdvik, it forks to ghostscipt
  29. to produce bitmap images of the PostScript pictures, BUT:
  30.  
  31.         With the xdvi which we had before (from the above mentioned
  32.         distribution), the environment variable XDVIFONTS would
  33.         specify the paths were xdvi searches the fonts. IF XDVIFONTS
  34.         is not set, then it would default to TEXFONTS and if TEXFONTS
  35.         was not set, it would default to the default of TEXFONTS.

  37.         *NOW* with xdvik installed as xdvi this is no longer true. If
  38.         XDVIFONTS is not defined, it will default to TEXFONTS. But it
  39.         will not default to the default of TEXFONTS. So now the users
  40.         on our site have to set either XDVIFONTS or TEXFONTS
  41.         explicitly if they want to use xdvi (otherwise the fonts are
  42.         not found). Before installing xdvik this was *not* necessary.

  44. I tried to install xdvik so that it would have the same functionality
  45. as our old xdvi, but I didn't succeed in managing that xdvik would
  46. default to the default of TEXFONTS, if neither XDVIFONTS nor TEXFONTS
  47. is used. The main problem is, that I couldn't figure out were in the
  48. kpathsea library the default for TEXFONTS is set, respectively were
  49. the appropriate path is set in the xdvi distribution (I found in
  50. xdvi.c the point were the environment variable XDVIFONTS is read, but
  51. that didn't help much).

  53. So I would be happy if you can give me any pointers or help on how I
  54. could compile xdvik so that it has the functionality described above.

  62. P.S.: As a sidenote, if our old xdvi did not find a font, it would
  63. call MakeTeXPK and display the output of MakeTeXPK (reassuring for the
  64. user since he knows what is going on). Now xdvik also calls MakeTeXPK,
  65. but *does not* display the output of MakeTeXPK. So the user may wonder
  66. why his .dvi file is not displayed, because he doesn't notice that
  67. MakeTeXPK is generating fonts. Is there a possibility to change this
  68. behavior too?
